Chapter 22

Sarah propped her elbows up against the pine posts and gazed through the gap. Henry and Will had been up before the sun, and at first light, started repairing the corral. The two worked harmoniously together gathering materials, and stacking posts. She watched admiringly as Will took on the heavy lifting instead of Henry. For having only the use of one arm, she was amazed at the ease he seemed to be able to lift and move the various tools and materials. He was strong, and energetic, and by looking at him, it would seem that he was well rested. But, she knew that wasn’t the case at all.

She and Will’s middle of the night encounter lasted a while longer until they both decided they should try to get some sleep. Their conversation flowed effortlessly in front of the fire. She had no way of knowing about Will, but for herself, sleep didn’t come for a long time once she was in bed. Instead, she could only replay the events of the day over and over in her mind. Unfortunately, not all of the events left her feeling contented. Had it not been for making the unfortunate acquaintance of Margaret, it couldn’t have been more pleasant, or perfect. She had been reunited with her cat, and she remembered petting her nose. Well, perhaps she didn’t remember, but she knew what to do and that was the seedling of hope that was showing signs of growth. But, her time with Will was what left a lasting impression. She still couldn’t believe that she had wrapped her arms around him, as if it were instinctively what she felt to do. When he wrapped around her too, with a gentle protectiveness, it was such an unforeseen rush through her body that she could still feel it lingering in her mind, and even more so, on her body, this morning.

Now, she leaned against the posts and breathed in the air that still held a slight bite of the morning’s coolness. She closed her eyes and positioned her face to the sun. In the nearby trees, the birds were welcoming the morning, and she took note of the different songs, wishing she could also see what little bird was each making its own presence known to the world. It was moments like this that she craved. Appreciating what seemed like minute details, but in reality, were glimpses of peace, and gratitude for being able to be in this exact moment. She breathed in deeply, and for the first time since the accident, thanked God for this moment, and for allowing her to experience it.

She slowly opened her eyes, and squinted at the brightness after her eyes had become accustomed to the darkness. Shielding her eyes from the sun, she gazed across the pen and noticed Will had stopped working, and instead was staring at her. Once their eyes met, he smiled and gave a short nod of his head. “You doin’ okay over there?”

She smiled back.
